Crossfit coaches

Years ago I began skateboarding. The better I got the more I appreciated the limitless potential of what a human being could do with a simple plank of wood and a couple of wheels. The greats of the sport were truly only bound by their creativity. I wanted that, not just on a skateboard, in life. I wanted to be bound by nothing but the limitations I put on myself. Fast forward a few years and I found myself immersed in the world of obstacle course racing and the metaphor of overcoming any and all random obstacles wasn’t lost on me. I had found a microcosmic practice ground for the macrocosm of life. In an effort to get better in my chosen sport of choice, I stumbled upon CrossFit, and my world was complete. The CrossFit slogan of: “Prepare the body for any physical contingency, not only the known, but also the unknown” resonated with my soul. My effort to immerse myself with this methodology, resulted in my coaching certification, and the athletes I have the privilege of training everyday bring me so much joy that it’s a wonder it took me so long to become a CrossFit Coach.

As a former collegiate soccer player, I learned the importance of incorporating both cardio and resistance training into any regimen. However, after a few injuries, I discovered that I was training "sport specifically" rather than functionally. Insert CrossFit here. The very definition of CrossFit focuses on functional movement, which can lead to incredible, and often dramatic, body transformation. Then there are the goals, challenges and accomplishments that come from being part of a group of like-minded people committed to fitness, as well as the individual drive that comes when benchmark WODs roll around and it’s you vs. the clock. When I joined the YMCA, I didn’t even know they had a CrossFit box. When I got the opportunity to come on as a coach, it was a no-brainer. It’s a real privilege to coach athletes and watch them grow in confidence, energy and belief in themselves as they see real change happen.

At the age of seven, I told my mom that I wanted to join a swim team. She told me that as long as I balanced school work and swimming, I could join. 14 years later I finished my swimming career as a division one athlete, graduating from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. For the next couple of years, I stayed active through a multitude of activities including surfing, kickboxing, regular gym classes, running, yoga and more. You name it, I tried it. But something was missing, and I couldn't stay committed. When I was in graduate school, a friend introduced me to CrossFit, and I was immediately hooked. The combination of community, competition and the workouts themselves were exactly what I needed. Four years later, I am still inspired and excited about CrossFit.
